… And Speaking of Union-Busting, Some Employers Don’t Stop with Captive Audience Speeches …
In January, the ABC News show 20/20 reported the case of South Carolina Union organizer Gary McClain, who was involuntarily committed to a mental institution following one phone call by his employer to the local sheriff. One day after McClain spoke up at a workplace meeting in favor of the Union, his employer Tenneco Packaging Co. called the local sheriff and reported that McClain was threatening workers and a danger to the workplace.
“As he drove to work, McClain found himself surrounded at gunpoint by sheriff’s deputies … [who] took him to the local hospital, where, apparently on the basis of his employer’s claims, passed on by sheriff’s deputies, an emergency room doctor involuntarily committed him to a mental hospital. McClain spent the following two weeks in confinement being forcibly injected with anti-psychotic drugs before legal intervention gained his release,” reported 20/20. The NLRB issued a Complaint in January and has scheduled a hearing. In the meantime, McClain remains without work.
